Guinea Sets December 2025 for Long-Awaited Elections

Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah has announced that long-awaited general and presidential elections will take place in December, marking a potential end to military rule. Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, he also confirmed a constitutional referendum set for 21 September 2024—a key step in restoring democratic governance. The announcement follows the 2021 coup that ousted President Alpha Condé and brought General Mamadi Doumbouya to power. While the government is pushing forward with civil and voter registration, concerns remain over the regime’s crackdown on dissent, including the dissolution of dozens of political parties. Still, authorities insist 2025 will be a “crucial” year to complete Guinea’s transition to constitutional order.
