Hemedti, Leader of Sudan’s RSF, Accuses Egypt of Supporting Rival

Sudanese paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has accused Egypt of conducting airstrikes on RSF troops and supplying drones to Sudan’s army. In a recorded speech released on Wednesday, he claimed Egypt used US bombs in the attacks and alleged that foreign mercenaries, including Tigrayan and Eritrean forces, were involved. Egypt’s foreign ministry has since denied the accusations. However, it urged the international community to verify Hemedti’s claims. Although it is perceived as close to the Sudanese army and its leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Egypt has supported mediation efforts between Sudan’s warring factions and has even hosted peace talks. Despite earlier statements that signified that the RSF is open to peace with its rival, Hemedti stated that the war could last several years more. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced nearly 10 million people and worsened hunger in Sudan.
