How repurposed antibiotics are saving newborns

10

A groundbreaking clinical trial in Kenya is offering new hope in the fight against neonatal sepsis, a condition responsible for hundreds of thousands of infant deaths each year. The NeoSep1 study, led by the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership, is testing safer and more effective combinations of existing antibiotics to counter rising drug resistance. Researchers have narrowed more than 200 treatment options down to eight, including two older drugs—fosfomycin and flomoxef—now being repurposed for African hospitals. Running across eight countries and aiming to enroll 3,000 babies by 2029, the trial seeks to update global treatment guidelines and ensure faster, life-saving care for vulnerable newborns.
