Inside Egypt’s Ambitious Blueprint for Gaza’s Recovery and Growth

Recently, Egypt unveiled a $53 billion, three-phase plan to rebuild Gaza, aiming to stabilize the region and create a self-sustaining economy over five years. Backed by several European nations as well as the Arab League, the plan prioritizes keeping Gazans in their homeland while sidelining Hamas in favor of an independent transitional committee, eventually handing control to the Palestinian Authority. The three-stage plan begins with a six-month phase focused on clearing debris and unexploded ordnance from the territory. The second stage is the rebuilding phase, with schools, hospitals, and 200,000 housing units to be built over two years. The final phase, lasting two-and-a-half years, will transform the enclave into a self-sustaining economy, developing industrial zones, a seaport, a technology hub, and coastal tourism facilities. However, challenges loom—resistance from Hamas, Israel’s objections, and a fragile ceasefire could derail efforts.
