Kenyan Magistrate Dies After Open Court Shooting by Aggrieved Police Officer

Kenyan magistrate Monica Kivuti, who was shot by senior police officer Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, has died from her injuries, according to Chief Justice Martha K Koome. Kivuti, serving at Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi, was attacked after canceling bail for Kipruto’s wife, who had absconded. Kipruto, later shot dead by other officers, had a clear intent to kill Kivuti, according to Justice Koome’s statement. The attack also injured three officers, who are now stable. The incident has shocked Kenyans as it marks a rare case of courtroom violence. The judiciary has pledged to enhance security measures to ensure the safety of judicial staff and assured court users of their security as well. The Law Society of Kenya has also condemned the attack, noting it reflects a troubling trend of threats against judicial officers and advocates. The authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
