Protesters in Kilifi County, Kenya, recently rallied against the government’s plans to build a nuclear power plant in their community, which is a popular coastal tourist hub and home to the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve. The project, set to begin in 2027, has sparked widespread opposition over environmental and health concerns. Activists, led by the Muslim for Human Rights (MUHURI), marched to the county governor’s office, where they submitted a petition against the 1,000 MW plant. Demonstrators fear the plant will harm the local ecosystem, including fish breeding sites and the forest reserve, which is home to endangered species. Residents like fisherman Timothy Nyawa worry about losing their livelihoods, while environmentalist Phyllis Omido warned the plant could damage the region’s eco-tourism.
