Kenya’s Ice Lions hockey team recently celebrated their first friendly league championship at East Africa’s only ice rink in Nairobi. Ice hockey arrived in Kenya in 2006 after a group of Canadians built the rink, and the national federation was formed in 2019. The Ice Lions, now the fifth African team in the International Ice Hockey Federation, are making strides toward the Olympics. Team captain Benjamin Mburu, who has been playing for nine years, says the sport is growing in popularity, especially among kids. However, challenges like expensive training and maintaining the rink in a warm climate persist.
