Lagos’ underground rave scene, once a refuge built on inclusivity, is undergoing rapid transformation as mainstream attention and commercial interest grow. Originally rooted in countercultural values of peace, love, unity, and respect, raves offered safe spaces for marginalized groups, including LGBTQ attendees, to express themselves freely. However, rising popularity, larger crowds, and brand sponsorships have introduced new pressures, risking the erosion of the scene’s core ethos. Organizers face impossible trade-offs: accept sponsorship and lose creative direction, or stay underground and absorb crippling costs personally. For many attendees, especially queer participants, increased visibility has reduced the sense of freedom once central to the experience. While some believe the scene will evolve into both mainstream and underground strands, others fear the loss of a vital cultural sanctuary.
