Bamboo Roof Concept Wins Senegal Community Center Competition

A community center designed for rural southern Senegal has won the 2026 Kaira Looro Architecture Competition, offering a model for locally adaptable and environmentally responsive construction. Designed by architects Afroditi Ioannidou and Vladimir Gligorovski, the project draws inspiration from the traditional impluvium houses of Casamance, which organize domestic life around a central courtyard. The winning design expands that principle into village-scale infrastructure, using rammed earth and a sweeping bamboo roof to create shaded communal areas. The roof’s raised ridge supports passive ventilation, while thatch beneath the metal covering provides insulation. The design relies on locally sourced laterite soil and simple construction methods using rope and wire joints so residents can participate in building and maintaining it themselves. The building will be constructed as part of the prize.
