Egyptian Designers Turn Plastic Waste Into Luxury Goods

Facing Egypt’s mounting plastic pollution crisis, designers Mariam Hazem and Hend Riad are repurposing waste into sustainable products through their Cairo brand, Reform Studio. Using a material they invented called Plastex, made by weaving plastic threads with natural fibers, the pair transforms discarded bags into furniture, bags, and clothing. The technique revives Egypt’s ancient handweaving tradition, connected to textiles dating back thousands of years, now recognized as endangered cultural heritage. So far, they have repurposed more than 37 tons of plastic waste. Their products, which can withstand significant weight, are handmade by skilled craftspeople, including women from underserved communities. Reform Studio’s work has gained international recognition through partnerships with IKEA, exhibitions at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and appearances at Paris Fashion Week.
