Five South African Designers Making Their Mark Globally

Five South African designers have helped expand the country’s fashion influence internationally, bringing distinctly South African aesthetics, craftsmanship, and cultural references to major global audiences. In 2019, Thebe Magugu became the first African winner of the LVMH Prize, earning prize money and mentorship from the luxury group. Laduma Ngxokolo’s MAXHOSA AFRICA turned Xhosa beadwork traditions into globally recognized knitwear, and his work has been featured in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Rich Mnisi has dressed stars including Beyoncé and Naomi Campbell, and has shown at Milan Fashion Week. He has also won Vogue Italia’s Scouting for Africa award. Lukhanyo Mdingi, known for artisan collaborations, has won the LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize and the AMIRI Prize. He has also shown in Paris and New York. Meanwhile, David Tlale debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2014 and continues building his brand internationally while staying rooted in South Africa. Together, these five designers show that distinctly local identity and craftsmanship can become a defining strength in global fashion.
