A designer in Gabon creates elegant high fashion outfits using traditional raffia materials.

Gabonese designer Chouchou Lazare is turning a centuries-old material into high fashion, bringing traditional raffia from Central Africa to the runways of Paris. Working from his studio in Libreville, the self-taught designer transforms the palm-fiber textile into striking dresses, bustiers, skirts, and accessories. Raffia holds deep cultural meaning in Gabon, where it has long been linked to nobility and spiritual traditions, including Bwiti ceremonies. Lazare keeps the fibers in their natural color, highlighting their texture and craftsmanship while honoring their heritage. His journey into fashion began at age nine, helping his mother sew clothes to support the family. Decades later, his creations are earning international attention. While raffia clothing originated in Africa, Lazare views it as a cultural treasure to share with the world.
