Lagos Fashion Week Puts Sustainability at the Forefront

Lagos Fashion Week has returned for its 15th edition, bringing together leading African designers, including Lisa Folawiyo, Nkwo, Orange Culture, and Emmy Kasbit. This year’s theme, “Crafted,” places heritage, craftsmanship, and circular fashion at the heart of the event. The choice signals a shift in focus: beyond showcasing runway talent, the event now aims to help build a commercially viable and sustainable African fashion sector. Organizers want to translate growing international interest in African design into lasting economic opportunities for local manufacturers, artisans, and creative businesses. However, significant structural challenges remain. Founder Omoyemi Akerele says the industry’s main obstacle is not a shortage of creativity but inadequate infrastructure. Limited access to financing, manufacturing capacity, and distribution continues to constrain its growth. The event therefore seeks to move the conversation beyond fashion showcases toward building the systems needed to support African designers and businesses.
