A community initiative in Kenya’s Maasai Mara is helping men rebuild their sense of purpose by combining economic opportunity with mental health support. Established in 2018 through a partnership between Canadian philanthropist Dave Richardson and WE Charity, the Beehive program trains Maasai men in beekeeping and carpentry while providing a safe space to discuss depression, stress, domestic violence, and changing social roles. Participants have increased household incomes by an average of 25%, enabling them to invest in livestock and education. Since 2024, the initiative has expanded to include comprehensive mental health training for teachers, students, and community members, encouraging open conversations once considered taboo. Organizers say participants are demonstrating healthier relationships and greater emotional resilience, while local leaders are developing a train-the-trainer model to ensure the program continues independently and strengthens long-term community well-being.
