A musical adaptation of Malawian engineer William Kamkwamba’s celebrated memoir, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, has made its West End debut in London. The play recounts how, during the devastating Malawian famine of 2001, a 13-year-old Kamkwamba built a windmill using scrap metal and salvaged physics textbooks, an invention that brought electricity to his village at a time when only 2% of Malawians had access to power. Kamkwamba’s ingenuity enabled his family and neighbors to run a water pump and irrigate crops for food. The adaptation transforms an already globally resonant African story into a new artistic medium, amplifying its reach and emotional impact. The production stands as a testament to African innovation and resilience, bringing a story of rural ingenuity and determination to one of the world’s most prestigious theatrical stages.
