Mali Junta Sacks Civilian Prime Minister, Appoints General as Replacement

Mali’s military leadership has appointed General Abdoulaye Maiga as the new prime minister, following the dismissal of civilian leader Choguel Kokalla Maiga. The decision came a day after Choguel publicly criticized the junta for its lack of clarity on returning to civilian rule. Abdoulaye Maiga, who previously served as the government’s spokesperson, is a close ally of the military regime, which has controlled Mali since taking power in a 2021 coup. The leadership change further cements the military’s hold on the country, which has faced prolonged jihadist and separatist conflicts. Although the junta initially pledged elections by March 2024, they have since postponed them indefinitely, raising concerns over the transition to civilian governance. The move underscores the military’s intention to maintain power amid growing domestic and international scrutiny.
