Cybercrime is rapidly becoming a dominant threat across Africa, with Interpol warning that the continent’s digital boom is outpacing its cyber defenses. According to the organization, phishing is the most widespread form of cybercrime on the continent, with ransomware attacks and business email compromise also ranking high. Romance scams also recently joined the mix of Africa’s top cybercrimes, having skyrocketed in 2024 in Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire. The emergence of artificial intelligence and social media has made things worse as AI-driven tactics are testing even advanced systems. More troubling, many African countries still lack basic reporting and threat-tracking tools. To counter the growing cybercrime threat, Interpol urges greater public awareness, legal reforms, and sustained cybersecurity investment.
