Tensions in Kenya escalated after President William Ruto ordered police to shoot violent protesters in the leg to stop destruction while avoiding fatalities. His remarks come amid nationwide anti-government demonstrations that have left at least 31 people dead and hundreds injured. Human rights groups and the UN condemned the police’s use of lethal force, especially as reports surfaced of attacks on hospitals and a 12-year-old child killed by a stray bullet. Ruto defended the crackdown, claiming it was necessary to maintain order and prevent unconstitutional regime change. However, opposition leaders accused the government of state-sponsored violence and called for a national boycott.
