Memoirs from a Wine Safari

After a bush breakfast, guests head back to the luxe Mara Nyika Camp – a streak of five elevated canvas tents under umbrellas of flat-topped acacia kirkii trees – and can do a deep dive into the camp’s wine list, presented via the new app loaded onto a tablet. This list goes far beyond just red and white with close to 50 bottles, and the app allows you to filter by things like country, varietal, and expert rating. The wines are largely South African (about 65 per cent), though there are plenty bottles from afar too, including kosher picks from Isreal. All the wine is hand-selected, and there’s a focus on highlighting other conservation-focused brands (like Painted Wolf, Paul Cluver, and Cederberg Wines) and championing African success stories like Mosi Wines made by Zimbabwean refugee turned winemaker Joseph Dhafana. About 15 per cent of the list changes each year, to add in new discoveries and adapt to new trends.
