Officials have confirmed that a Mexican man mistakenly deported to South Sudan by the United States has finally been repatriated to Mexico. J. Jesus Muñoz Gutierrez, one of eight people sent to the African nation in May, said he felt “kidnapped” by US authorities, who he claimed should have returned him directly to Mexico. The deportees, who came from several countries, were initially held in Djibouti before being transferred to South Sudan following a US Supreme Court ruling. While South Sudan praised the “smooth and orderly” handover to Mexico’s envoy, US authorities maintain the deportees were all criminals whose home countries refused to take them back. Meanwhile, six of the original group remain in custody as negotiations continue with their home governments.
