Moroccan authorities made critical decisions that led to the deaths of dozens of asylum seekers trying to cross into Melilla two years ago, according to a report by the NGO Border Forensics. The event, widely considered one of the deadliest days on the EU-Africa land border, occurred on June 24, 2022, and resulted in the death of at least 27 people and the disappearance of 70 others. The investigation revealed that Moroccan forces pushed migrants towards the border, while increasing militarization. It also claims that Moroccan forces carried out a series of attacks, including destruction of food and money, stoning, and firing of rubber bullets, in a bid to drive hundreds of asylum seekers from their camps and to the border fence. There, they fired tear gas canisters to further disorient the refugees, thereby causing a stampede that resulted in the deaths of dozens.
