Morocco Breaks Ground on Africa’s First Battery Gigafactory

Morocco is set to host Africa’s first battery gigafactory, backed by a massive $5.6 billion investment from China’s Gotion High-Tech. This landmark $5.6 billion project will position Morocco as a key player in the global clean energy supply chain. The Kenitra plant, scheduled to begin production in late 2026, will produce electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems primarily for export to Europe. It aims for an initial capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours, eventually scaling to 100 gigawatt-hours annually, and is projected to create up to 10,000 jobs. The project underscores China’s growing influence in Africa and sets a precedent for value-added manufacturing across the continent.
