Morocco Halts Migrant Influx into Spanish Territory of Ceuta

Moroccan security forces have thwarted a mass migration attempt into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, following social media calls for a large-scale border crossing. According to the Spanish Interior Ministry, several people tried to breach the border fence. However, none succeeded. The situation was controlled through coordinated efforts between Moroccan and Spanish security forces. Moroccan authorities also arrested 60 people suspected of inciting the migration attempt online. According to reports, most of the would-be migrants, which included Moroccans and migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and Algeria, dispersed after witnessing the increased security presence. Ceuta and Melilla have long been hotspots for migrants seeking entry into Europe in search of better opportunities. In August alone, Moroccan authorities prevented over 11,000 migration attempts in the region around Ceuta and about 3,000 attempts in the region around Melilla.
