Moscow tightens security ties with Southern Africa

Russia and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have extended their military and technical cooperation agreements until 2028. During a meeting in Gaborone, Russian and SADC officials agreed to shift their 2018 frameworks from broad diplomatic commitments to practical execution. To this end, Russia proposed a new action plan focused on logistics support, defense capacity building, and technical assistance for regional security structures. With the development, Russia strengthens its institutional foothold in Southern Africa, locking in long-term defense and technical agreements with a powerful 16-nation regional bloc. Meanwhile, Western powers vying for strategic influence in the region face entrenched competition as Moscow moves beyond isolated bilateral deals to solidify military ties at the multilateral level.
