Mozambique’s Opposition Leader Vows to Continue Fight Against Frelimo

Mozambique’s opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, has vowed to continue challenging the ruling party, Frelimo, following the disputed 2024 elections. Mondlane accused the party and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, of fraud, after Chapo was declared the winner. He then urged his supporters to demonstrate in protest. However, the authorities violently suppressed the demonstrations, leading to hundreds of deaths and mass displacement. In an interview with DW, Mondlane emphasized that the protests have exposed systemic corruption and united citizens across social divides. Beyond that, he criticized Frelimo’s lack of reform and dismissed Chapo’s calls for dialogue as insincere. Highlighting the need for citizens to assert their rights, particularly in resource-rich areas, Mondlane advocated direct negotiations with mining companies, arguing that the government has done an ineffective job. Mondlane also stated that while he is open to dialogue, he has not seen any indication that Chapo wants the same.
