Museum Finds Reveal Egyptian Village Life Before Pharaohs

Researchers have re-examined nearly 3,000 flint tools excavated in 1905–1906 from Heliopolis, finding that specialized craft work existed in Egyptian farming communities before the first pharaohs unified the Nile Valley. The collection they examined included finished tools, flint cores, flakes, and production debris, allowing them to reconstruct how blades were made. Dating to shortly before 3000 BCE, the finds show a workshop where skilled knappers produced more blades than they needed, with a nearby brewery area relying on those blades. This pattern suggests specialization existed in farming villages before Egypt became a state. Researchers believe that when standardized blades from larger workshops later replaced local ones, communities were already accustomed to depending on others for tools, thereby making the shift seamless.
