US Returns Dozens of Smuggled Artifacts to Egypt

The FBI has returned dozens of Egyptian artifacts to government officials in a ceremony in Los Angeles, marking another major repatriation effort between the United States and Egypt. The recovered objects include jewelry, statues, and sculptures dating from three significant periods of Egyptian history: the Pharaonic, Roman, and Coptic periods. US authorities recovered the items from a smuggler who has since died, although the FBI says the investigation remains active. Authorities said they are seeking potential co-conspirators and believe additional artifacts may still be missing. The latest return contributes to a much larger repatriation effort. According to the FBI, US law enforcement agencies have returned more than 5,000 archaeological and cultural artifacts to Egypt during the past decade.
