Nigeria Upholds $220M Fine Against Meta for Consumer Violations

3

In a landmark decision for digital rights enforcement, Nigeria’s Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal has upheld a $220 million fine against Meta Platforms. Originally issued by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) in July 2024, the penalty addresses Meta’s alleged discriminatory, exploitative practices and violations of local consumer, data protection, and privacy laws. This decision sends a strong message: global tech giants must respect national regulations and treat users equitably across all markets. For Nigeria, it marks a bold step in asserting digital sovereignty and protecting citizens’ rights in the data economy.
