Lesotho, a mountainous kingdom completely surrounded by South Africa, has been thrust into the spotlight after US President Donald Trump claimed that “nobody has ever heard of it.” The “Kingdom in the Sky” is the only independent nation entirely above 1,000m in elevation and is home to one of the world’s scariest airstrips. Despite its rugged landscape, Lesotho is Africa’s denim capital, exporting jeans to the US. Its most valuable resource is water, dubbed “white gold.” Lesotho also has one of the highest HIV rates globally and has the world’s highest suicide rate. Interestingly, Prince Harry has long supported Lesotho through his Sentebale charity, helping young people affected by HIV/AIDS.
