Ramaphosa to Meet Trump as Pretoria Seeks to Repair Relations with Washington

2

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet US President Donald Trump on May 21 in a bid to resolve a worsening diplomatic standoff. According to a statement by South Africa’s Presidency, Ramaphosa and Trump will discuss “bilateral, regional, and global issues of interest” during the meeting. Tensions flared between the two countries after Trump accused South Africa of persecuting White farmers—allegations denied by Pretoria—and froze aid, imposed tariffs, and expelled South Africa’s ambassador. Pretoria’s decision to file a case accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians, as well as its close ties with Iran, deepened the rift. Ramaphosa’s visit aims to reset strategic relations, especially with US trade benefits under threat. While officials hope for de-escalation, analysts warn progress may be limited. The fallout has already overshadowed South Africa’s G20 presidency.
