Rwandan Genocide Suspect Félicien Kabuga Dies Before Facing Final Justice

The wealthy Rwandan businessman accused of financing and orchestrating the 1994 genocide against Tutsis, has died in The Hague while in United Nations custody. Long regarded as one of the genocide’s principal architects, Kabuga spent more than two decades evading capture across Africa and Europe before his arrest near Paris in 2020. Prosecutors alleged he funded militias, imported machetes, and used his radio station to incite mass killings that claimed more than 800,000 lives. Declared unfit for trial in 2023 because of dementia, Kabuga never faced a final verdict, leaving many survivors without judicial closure for their losses.
