South Africa withdraws from Venice Biennale

South Africa will not host a national pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale despite winning a court case over its choice of artist, ending a streak of participation that dates back to 2011. The dispute began after Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, a vocal Israel supporter, blocked artist Gabrielle Goliath’s Gaza-related installation, arguing the exhibition should present a more positive national image. Although a court dismissed Goliath’s lawsuit challenging the decision, the government ultimately chose to withdraw entirely from the prestigious event, often described as the art world’s Olympics. Critics say the absence is embarrassing for a country with one of Africa’s most robust art scenes. Goliath plans to appeal and is exploring ways to stage her work independently.
