South African poetry, long underappreciated, is gaining recognition through the Deep South Books and Archive initiative. This free digital archive focuses on poets published by a small press in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, offering background information, book excerpts, interviews, and multimedia resources. The archive showcases key poets such as Vonani Bila, Mangaliso Buzani, and Lesego Rampolokeng, among others. The simple, alphabetically indexed structure makes it easy to explore this overlooked tradition of South African literature. The initiative aims to elevate the voices of these poets and provide access to their work, helping to preserve and celebrate South Africa’s rich literary history.
