South Sudan Schedules Long-delayed National Elections

South Sudan’s National Election Commission has officially set December 22, 2026, as the date for the country’s long-awaited inaugural general election, a major step in implementing the 2018 peace agreement that ended years of civil conflict. Commission chairperson Abednego Akok Kacuol said the vote aligns with the extended transitional period established under the revitalized peace accord. A nationwide voter registration drive is expected to launch soon and conclude within a month, with a detailed electoral timeline to follow shortly. However, the commission warned that legal inconsistencies, funding gaps, and logistical challenges must be addressed quickly to ensure a credible election. South Sudan has repeatedly delayed elections since gaining independence in 2011.
