Starlink Takes Off in Congo After Government Lifts Ban

8

Elon Musk has announced that Starlink, his satellite connectivity company, is now live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following the government’s reversal of a previous ban. The satellite internet service aims to bridge the digital divide in a country where only 30% of the population has internet access, particularly in conflict-prone regions. The DRC government had previously banned Starlink citing national security concerns. The ban was influenced by military officials’ fears that rebel groups like the M23 might exploit the service. With DRC’s approval, Starlink is now active in at least 18 African countries and expanding fast—entering six in 2025 alone. Musk also hinted at future expansion into Uganda, while South Africa remains a notable holdout amid ongoing regulatory tensions.
