Step Towards Peace? Congo and Rwanda Present Draft Plan to US

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have tendered a draft peace proposal, aimed at ending the deadly conflict in eastern Congo, to the US. Eastern Congo, rich in cobalt, gold, and copper, has seen intensified fighting since M23 rebels—allegedly backed by Rwanda—captured two of the region’s biggest cities earlier this year. US officials, including President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Africa and the Middle East, Massad Boulos, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have backed the peace process, linking regional stability to future US investment in critical minerals. Talks between Congo and Rwanda are expected to continue in May, with hopes of a final agreement signed in Washington by June. If successful, the deal could open doors to peace and prosperity across Central Africa.
