Sudan’s army has ended the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) siege of el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, which has lasted almost two years. The city is an important hub that connects Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, to Darfur. According to reports, the army destroyed RSF units in el-Obeid, paving the way for humanitarian aid to flow into the city. The military and RSF have been locked in a fierce conflict since April 2023, which has claimed the lives of tens of thousands and displaced millions more. While the RSF initially had the upper hand in the war, the tide recently shifted in favor of the army, with the recapture of el-Obeid coming after gains in Khartoum.
