Sudan’s RSF Forms Rival Government, Deepening Nation’s Divide

8

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies have announced a rival government, naming Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’ayshi as prime minister. The rebel coalition led by the RSF also unveiled a 15-member presidential council led by RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. This bold move, declared from Nyala in South Darfur, challenges the army-backed administration and heightens fears of further national fragmentation. After more than two years of civil war, the RSF currently controls much of Darfur and parts of Kordofan, while the army controls Sudan’s north, east, and center. The move follows a political charter that the RSF and its allies signed in Nairobi in February.
