Internet Users across East Africa Experience Outage People across four East African nations – Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda – have been experiencing poor connectivity that bears a resemblance to what happened across some West African countries in March. According to reports, the connectivity problem stems from faulty under-sea cables that link these countries with other parts of the world via South Africa. Since the issue began, many of the telecom providers that operate in the region have indicated they are aware of the problem and are working to fix it. SOURCE: BBC Egypt Joins South Africa's ICJ Genocide Case in Major Blow to Israel Egypt has declared its intention to formally support South Africa in its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed this on Sunday, stating that Israel’s escalated aggression against Palestinian civilians has forced them to choose a side. The Middle-Eastern country is the third nation to band with South Africa on the case after Colombia and Turkey. The announcement has evoked reactions from all over the world, with Israel’s former foreign minister, Alon Liel, describing Egypt’s move as a diplomatic blow to Israel. SOURCE: AL JAZEERA Itno Wins Chad's Presidential Elections by a Landslide Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, Chad’s current military leader, has been declared winner of the election held across the country on Monday, May 6. Declared by the country’s national election agency on Thursday, the election results came two weeks earlier than previously planned. Itno won the election with a whopping 61% of the total votes cast while his primary rival and Chad’s current prime minister, Succès Masra, came a distant second with 18.5%. Masra denounced the result hours before the authorities’ announcement and, in a speech where he declared himself the winner, called on the country’s armed forces to stop following Itno’s orders. SOURCE: THE GUARDIAN South African Survivor Rescued 116 Hours after Building Collapse Rescuers working at a collapsed building in George, South Africa, saved a survivor on Saturday. The survivor was trapped under the rubble for 116 hours with the building having crumpled on Monday for reasons that are still unknown. Officials revealed that 81 people were in the building when the incident happened. With the new survivor, 29 people have now been rescued. Unfortunately, 13 people have been confirmed dead and 39 remain unaccounted for. SOURCE: DW Tunisians Demand Date for Presidential Elections, End to Repression Hundreds of civilians gathered on the streets of Tunis, Tunisia’s capital, on Sunday to protest against the unjust imprisonment of people who criticized President Kais Saied’s government, including journalists, activists, lawyers, and opposition members. The protesters spoke against the government’s actions and called for a free and fair presidential election in the North African nation. SOURCE: REUTERS Rebel Attack Claims Lives in Central African Republic Mining Town A group of armed rebels attacked a Chinese-run gold mining town in Central African Republic on Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring others. According to a local government spokesperson, Maxime Balalu, the attack was carried out by the Coalition of Patriots for Change, a rebel group that is reportedly loyal to former President Francois Bozize. This strike is the latest in a series of attacks that has claimed the lives of several Chinese nationals and deterred foreign companies from carrying out mining activities in the country. SOURCE: VOANEWS Rwanda Denies Burundi Accusation It Sponsored Terrorist Attack Rwanda has refuted claims by neighboring Burundi that it armed a rebel group accused of executing a terrorist attack in Bujumbura, its economic capital. The grenade attack, which was carried out on Friday, injured at least 38 people. According to the spokesperson for Burundi's interior ministry, Pierre Nkurikiye, the attack was carried out by the RED-Tabara rebel group and sponsored by Rwanda through the supply of arms. The RED-Tabara rebels have also denied the allegation. SOURCE: WASHINGTON POST Harry and Meghan Play Volleyball on Nigeria Trip The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, played sit-down volleyball with Nigeria’s wounded army veterans on the second day of his three-day private visit to the country with his wife Meghan Markle. The volleyball game took place at an event organized by Nigeria’s Defense Staff in conjunction with the local charity, Nigeria: Unconquered. The game ended 25 to 21, with the Duke’s team, Invictus losing to the injured veterans.
