South Africa could lose up to 100,000 jobs due to US tariffs, central bank governor Lesetja Kganyago has warned. The 30% levy, set to take effect from August 1, threatens key export sectors, particularly the agriculture and automotive industries. According to farmer groups, citrus fruit, grapes, wine, and car exports are highly exposed to the tariffs. Meanwhile, auto exports to the US plummeted by over 80% in April, when President Donald Trump placed tariffs on cars. Kganyago described the situation as concerning. With South Africa’s unemployment already at 32.9%—and 43.1% under expanded definitions—the looming tariff fallout could worsen an already dire situation unless alternative markets or trade solutions are found.
