Africa’s new credit rating agency is in discussions with 15 African governments as it prepares to publish its first sovereign credit ratings by March 2027. Launched last month in Mauritius following an African Union initiative, the agency aims to offer an alternative perspective on how the continent’s creditworthiness is assessed. Its initial research will include countries such as Kenya, Togo, Seychelles, Burundi and Mauritius. AfCRA’s emergence comes amid longstanding concerns among African leaders that international ratings agencies, including Moody’s, S&P Global and Fitch, overstate lending risks, contributing to higher borrowing costs. The agency estimates African economies pay an additional $75 billion annually in interest compared with borrowers elsewhere. However, establishing credibility will be critical. While AfCRA hopes to bring greater local economic insight into credit assessments, its independence, transparency and ability to earn investor confidence will determine whether it can influence how Africa is financed.
