The African Development Bank (AfDB) is in active discussions with major Asian battery manufacturers from India, Japan, and South Korea to boost mineral processing within Africa. The move aims to shift the continent from a raw exporter to a value-adding powerhouse. AfDB Vice President Solomon Quaynor revealed the bank is exploring investment partnerships with these companies through which they would receive capital in exchange for supporting local processing. The initiative focuses on leveraging Africa’s rich reserves of lithium, cobalt, and copper—key ingredients in rechargeable batteries. By encouraging in-country value addition, the bank hopes to catalyze industrial growth and keep more economic benefits on the continent. It’s a bold push for African self-determination in the global energy supply chain.
