AfDB Targets Untapped Domestic Capital

By Semafor·Edited by Editor TO·

The African Development Bank is working with financiers to mobilize about $4 trillion in untapped domestic capital. The initiative seeks to help address Africa’s annual development financing gap, estimated at $400 billion. To achieve this, AfDB is seeking to improve coordination among African pension funds, banks, and capital markets so more domestic resources can be deployed through better risk allocation. The institution also plans to launch an initiative helping African governments prepare more effectively for credit ratings. AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah argued that limited transparency in some markets contributes to perceptions of high risk, which can increase borrowing costs. The bank intends to work with governments to improve the quality and availability of data, potentially making African markets easier for investors to assess.
