Africa Leads Global Improvements in Disaster Resilience
African regions have recorded the world’s fastest improvements in disaster resilience since 2023, according to research from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The findings draw on the 2025 World Risk Poll, which surveyed more than 143,000 people across 140 countries and territories. North Africa recorded a five-point improvement in resilience, followed by Southern Africa with four points, while Eastern, Central, and Western Africa each gained three points. Expanding internet access, stronger household preparedness, and improved financial resilience contributed to progress in countries including Algeria, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and Uganda. Yet gaps persist: just 47% of disaster-affected adults in Central and Western Africa received a warning. Researchers caution that faster improvement does not mean Africa is already the most resilient continent.
