The World Bank has predicted that Sub-Saharan Africa will become the world’s largest source of new workers over the next 25 years. The region’s population is expected to grow from about 1.5 billion in 2024 to 2.5 billion by 2050, with over 600 million additional people entering the workforce. This demographic shift could position Africa at the center of the global labor market as populations age and workforces contract elsewhere. But the opportunity comes with a major challenge: the region must create an average of 25 million jobs annually through 2050 to keep pace with labor-force growth. The World Bank recommends more productive, diversified, and private-sector-led growth, supported by infrastructure, skills development, and institutions that reduce business costs. It identifies agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, tourism, and infrastructure as key sectors for large-scale job creation.
