African Infrastructure Insurer Plans Capital Expansion

By Reuters·Edited by Editor TO·

A new highway in Kenya enhances transportation and economic growth in Africa.

The African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) aims to double its capital base to $2 billion within two years to support larger infrastructure investments across Africa. The insurer is seeking additional shareholders, including France, other G7 countries, and about 30 African nations that have yet to join the institution. Established 25 years ago, ATIDI helps attract private investment into high-risk projects through political risk insurance and guarantees. Recently, the African Development Bank increased its stake in the organization to 14% with a $125 million investment, strengthening ATIDI’s ability to expand its annual guarantee capacity. Doubling its capital would allow the organization to raise annual guarantees to $20 billion, supporting projects such as Tanzania’s modern railway, Safaricom’s expansion into Ethiopia, and innovative debt restructuring initiatives that reduce borrowing costs for African governments.
