Johannesburg is preparing to host the final of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Africa Prize, putting the continent’s inventors in the spotlight. Past participants say the competition has helped them develop technologies designed to improve lives. Atish Shah, who took part five years ago, told Semafor that his Dar es Salaam-based company, Roverlabs, is developing a bionic hand for amputees. The device uses electromyography technology to convert electrical impulses in muscle tissue into movement. Roverlabs also uses 3D printing to make customized assistive devices for people living with disabilities, including insoles, helmets, dentures, and braces. In November, the firm plans to launch a home imaging service that will enable people living in Tanzania’s rural areas to access X-ray and ultrasound technology.
