African leaders attending the ongoing BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, have advocated for reforms to international institutions, emphasizing the need for a fairer global system based on justice and equity. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s president, highlighted economic challenges such as debt and funding shortages that hinder developing countries’ growth. He stated that his country is taking steps to ensure the global community is aware of its role in assisting with the development of these countries. el-Sisi’s South African counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa, called for a reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and advocated for changes to trade rules to boost industrialization. He also urged a ceasefire in Gaza and the Middle East and called for the recognition of Palestinian self-determination. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed pushed for UN Security Council reforms to give developing countries more influence in global governance.
