Africa’s largest economies are increasingly seeking to manufacture solar equipment domestically, driven by industrial ambitions and concerns about dependence on Chinese imports. Ethiopia, South Africa, Morocco and Nigeria are among the countries expanding local assembly and manufacturing efforts. Nevertheless, China remains dominant across the global supply chain. South Africa’s Eskom plans a 1-gigawatt solar manufacturing facility, while Nigeria’s local assembly capacity has increased from roughly 120 megawatts to about 300 megawatts over two years. However, Africa lacks commercial-scale solar cell manufacturing, leaving new factories dependent on imported Chinese components for the most sophisticated production stages. Chinese investment is also helping the continent develop its manufacturing and technical capacity. As a result, analysts expect Beijing’s dominance to become even more entrenched.
