An African Union mediation team has urged continued peace efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after meeting leaders of the Rwanda-backed AFC/M23 rebel movement. The delegation, including former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde, and former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, pressed the rebels to respect the July 2025 Doha commitments, adhere to the ceasefire, and cooperate with verification teams, while stressing civilian protection and humanitarian access. AFC/M23 controls large areas of North and South Kivu, giving it substantial leverage amid its conflict with the Congolese government. So far, the peace process has produced limited gains, including the release of detainees. If ceasefire mechanisms hold, however, civilians will benefit a lot more. Longer term, the outcome will shape Congo’s territorial control, Rwanda-Congo relations, and regional diplomacy.
